Livestock Price Insurance coming to maritime producers

At the Saskatchewan Stock Growers Association (SSGA) conference on June 10 in Swift Current, Sask., Canadian Cattle Association (CCA) vice president Tyler Fulton highlighted the expansion of Livestock Price Insurance, which will be available to producers in Eastern Canada. Initially announced in February, the expansion will finally come into effect sometime this week. “It’s something

“It’s a high premium, but that’s the highest level we’ve ever seen an insured index for a calf in the whole 10 years of the program.” – Jeff Legaarden, MASC.

MASC talks insurance options for cattle farmers

Record-setting cattle prices might prompt producers to consider livestock price insurance. That was the message from Manitoba Agricultural Services Corporation business development specialist and cattle producer Jeff Legaarden during a provincial StockTalk webinar Feb. 15. “We’re looking at a value of $390 for an insured index on a 600-weight animal,” said Legaarden. “And that premium goes out to be $12.62 (per hundredweight). Livestock Price Insurance and AgriStability make sense to enter when cattle prices are up expert says

Livestock Price Insurance (LPI) has never looked better for cattle producers, says Manitoba Agriculture Farm Management Specialist, Ben Hamm. Cattle prices have been rising steadily over the past 12 months, and they’re approaching the highs seen in 2014 and 2015. “We saw some significant profitability in 2014-2015,” says Hamm. “We never dreamed that we would

Comment: Affordability key to participation in beef programs

Canadian beef producers don’t enjoy the support their counterparts in the U.S. do

I wanted to applaud the recent Manitoba Co-operator editorial “A tale of two programs.” I read it in Alberta Farmer, where it was reprinted. As chair of the Alberta Beef Producers, it reflected many of my own views through this drought. We began to realize on July 9 that crops and cattle feed were deteriorating

Time for a shift on livestock price insurance?

Government cost sharing for premiums and an expansion to a permanent, nationwide program are on the list of price insurance changes beef producers would like to see

AgriStability might be taking up news headlines when it comes to business risk management, but the beef sector also has a wish list to overhaul Livestock Price Insurance. Three such asks, including several that echo stances already made at the national level through the Canadian Cattlemen’s Association (CCA), made the docket for the Manitoba Beef

Livestock Insurance Program goes offline

The Western Livestock Insurance Program makes adjustments to be more user friendly to those without Internet access

Manitoba livestock producers are getting new offline options to sign up for price insurance coverage. Until recently the only way to buy a Western Livestock Price Insurance Program (WLPIP) policy was to go on the Internet, activate an account through an online portal and buy a policy online, paying with a credit card. Now that’s

Some farmers wondered if signing up made sense when prices were near
record highs

Recent weakening cattle prices have triggered some payouts to Manitoba cattle producers enrolled in the Western Livestock Price Insurance Program. The federal-provincial program was launched in Manitoba in April 2014 to insure cattle and hog prices. While farmers never like lower prices, the good news is the program is helping offset the impact, said Jason Dobbin,

Manitoba pork producers are urged to speak to local election candidates
about their vision for the industry’s future

Canadians have heard all about the economy, and they’ve listened to announcements on terrorism and childcare — although not necessarily at the same time — but those on the campaign trail have said little about agriculture in the leadup to the federal election. Now, the Canadian Pork Council and its provincial counterpart are urging pork

The program based on Western Canada prices offers better protection than CME futures hedging

A new price insurance scheme for Manitoba livestock producers has officially been launched, but whether there will be a stampede through the gate remains to be seen. Applications for the Western Livestock Price Insurance Program (WLPIP), a new tool to manage risk and withstand market volatility, were unveiled last week by Food and Rural Development
