Holy crap! New bedding made from manure

Producers can save time and money by not having to bale or buy, then transport straw

Henry Holtmann reaches into a large pile of what looks like a cross between wood shavings and down feathers, then lets the soft fibres slip through his hands. “When you grab it in your hand, it’s like a brown fluff, that’s the best way to describe it; it’s not like sand and it’s not like

Short hay this year? Try grain

MAFRD nutritionists have developed a feeding schedule to accommodate
producers’ wallets during feed shortages

Cheap corn could be a lifesaver for Manitoba cattle producers who are short of feed this winter, but a provincial livestock specialist warns it must be handled with care. “Grain might be the ideal part of your diet this year,” Ray Bitner, livestock specialist with MAFRD, told listeners during the latest Stocktalk webinar. Summary of crop insects on Manitoba crops in 2014

Information intended to be useful for winter planning, preparations for next season

A “Summary of Insects on Crops in Manitoba in 2014” is now posted on the MAFRD website. This report is based partially on observation by myself and my summer assistant. A large part of this information, however, is based on observations and reports from farm production advisors, agronomists, farmers, and others who contributed information over

Community development with a small town feel

Manitoba towns learn what’s working for them — and what needs work —
with First Impressions Community Exchange program

A first impression is a lasting one — whether it’s a person or a place. For small towns, it can make the difference between new people wanting to come and live there — or looking elsewhere. Souris and Minnedosa both jumped at the chance to take part this summer in an ongoing program pairing Manitoba towns

At least one local farmer has resorted to removing kochia by hand

Glyphosate is arguably the world’s most important herbicide, but glyphosate resistant weeds are on the rise. Two Manitoba fields have glyphosate and group 2 resistant kochia. To delay glyphosate resistance farmers should reduce glyphosate use when possible. That’s the message Manitoba Agriculture, Food and Rural Development weed specialist Nasir Shaikh gave farmers Aug. 7 during the Manitoba

Canadian government invests in grain innovation partnership

Two priorities will be boosting corn acreage in Manitoba and exploring functional food and feed opportunities

The Canadian federal and Manitoba provincial governments are joining forces to create a new Grain Innovation Hub, designed to improve production, processing and value-added options for cereals, oilseeds and pulse crops. The hub will include various levels of government, industry groups, researchers, farm organizations and other stakeholders, in a bid to solidify the province’s place

Farmers need to question claims

A lot of products make a lot of different promises, but when it comes to how research is analyzed, farmers need to look for results that are statistically significant

Farmers need to ask more questions and demand better answers when confronted with new products promising yield gains based on sketchy data, a Manitoba Agriculture, Food and Rural Development official says. Terry Buss, a farm production adviser, told an Ag Days seminar he is getting more calls from farmers about the claims made by different
