A look back at global temperatures in 2022

It’s a near certainty that this past year will be the sixth warmest in the modern weather record

As another year winds down, we often reflect on what was and then look ahead. We tend to do this in all parts of our lives, and I like doing it with the weather. Due to deadlines for my articles over the holiday season, I will begin with a general look at global temperature patterns

From Ukraine: Two Christmases and one dream

Despite the threat of a renewed invasion, the population of Ukraine celebrates the season

Winter in Ukraine this year looks quite Canadian, with frequent snows and severe frosts, ice-covered roads and power lines. Of course, we are not very pleased with such a rampage of winter elements this year, because the electricity in Ukrainian houses is unreliable. I read in the news about what is an ordinary event for us – over Kyiv, our

Everyone talks about the weather but farmers live it.

Let’s talk about the weather!

A newly minted agriculture reporter reflects on his first six months on the job

The average person spends eight minutes a day talking about the weather. I just looked it up. I had done a handful of freelance articles for the Co-operator before coming on board as a staff writer in May. I’m a journalist by trade, and don’t have a ton of agriculture in my background. I knew

Year in review: hearing hard truths about First Nations farmers

Digging into the history of oppression and neglect of Indigenous farmers on the Prairies a heartbreaking but necessary endeavour

“They said agriculture is going to be your new buffalo. That’s how you’re going to feed yourselves,” Robert Maytwayashing told me. By ‘they’ he meant the Canadian government, many years ago. Maytwayashing is a former cattle farmer from Lake Manitoba First Nation, and he’s worked in multiple advocacy, leadership and cultural training roles. Farming went

KAP says the education tax on farm properties has been a priority during its dialogue with the provincial government.

Province delays property tax overhaul

KAP is taking the setback in stride, but reiterates call for action

After announcing plans in February to revamp the education funding system, the province now says it needs more time. In the February announcement, the province planned to implement the new taxation model in the 2023-24 year. However, Education Minister Wayne Ewasko told the media that the overhaul’s timeline has been reset for the 2024–25 school

Manitoba’s spring storms, my top story of 2022

The province saw a series of six storms over six weeks

In a previous article we began our look back at how 2022 shaped up, weather-wise, by examining global temperature patterns. This time we will zoom in closer to home and begin our annual review of Environment Canada’s top weather stories of 2022. As usual, I will put a bit of my own spin on some

Op/Ed: COP15 a call to action for investors

Funding sustainable businesses will require innovative financing mechanisms

The UN Secretary-General, António Guterres, opened the UN Convention on Biological Diversity (COP15) in Montréal with a stark message: “Without nature, we are nothing. Nature is our life-support system, and yet humanity seems hell bent on destruction.” The summit brought together delegates from more than 190 countries to negotiate the post-2020 Global Biodiversity Framework, the

Savoury stuffed pumpkin is an easy way to impress at the next holiday family gathering

If you’re lucky enough to have a big garden, you’ve probably had to excavate new recipes to suit the bumper crop that came from the garden corner that had exactly the right conditions. In some years it might be recipes for green beans or corn, or there might be so many English cucumbers that you

Arts and crafts filled the cold winter days before Christmas in a rural Manitoba classroom.

‘Twas the season: a Christmas story

Ms. Mandzuk taught Grade 2 kids important Christmas skills like tracing, colouring, cutting and gluing

With a cold spell, the Christmas season suddenly arrived at the Basswood School. I was in Grade 2 in 1967 in that Manitoba hamlet. Like most of my peers, we talked about it, but really didn’t know what to do. However, our resourceful teacher came to the rescue. Ms. Mandzuk had to handle both the

Weather: Cold Christmas, then milder

Forecast issued December 16, covering the period from December 21 to December 28, 2022

The main area of low pressure that the models forecasted to impact our region during the last forecast period did materialize, but it ended up taking a much more westerly route than expected. In fact, the low retrograded or moved from east to west a little bit. This meant the rainfall from this system fell
