Drought conditions continue to drive volumes as producers forced to sell

Increasing demand from cattle producers selling their herds convinced Tyler Slawinski of Gladstone Auction Mart to hold a sale Aug. 3, even if it wasn’t entirely the best idea. “We had 160 head. It wasn’t cost feasible to run a sale that small, but we like to provide a service for producers in need. That’s

Cattle sector says long-term plan needed

Relief has been promised, but with many ranchers selling down herds, producers say there must be a long-term plan to get them back in the game

Though the gears of government relief programs have begun grinding into motion, that aid will come far too late for many drought-stricken ranchers. “It’s taking so long,” said Arnthor Jonasson, who is a cattle farmer and the reeve of the RM of West-Interlake. “If the government is at all interested in trying to save the

Drought in stark focus as producers forced to cut herds

In Allan Munroe’s 10 years at the Killarney Auction Mart, he has never before needed to conduct a sale at his auction site in July. However, desperate times for cattle producers called for having a sale of 285 butchers and feeders on July 26. Killarney was not alone as Gladstone, Grunthal, Winnipeg and both Heartland

“Price and quality of alternative forages will play a key role in determining whether they can be used in a given production situation.” – Zac Carlson, NDSU.

Going non-traditional on forage

Tips and considerations for putting up atypical sources of livestock feed

Many producers are seeking alternative, possibly non-traditional, sources of forage such as cattails, flax, kochia, millet varieties and soybeans in light of continued drought. “With limited forage on the market and high prices, it may be a better option to evaluate local hay options,” North Dakota State University Extension beef cattle specialist Zac Carlson said.

While it is important to be aware of risks associated with feeding canola forage, it may provide an alternate forage for drought-stricken livestock producers.

It can work as an emergency source, but some risks need to be managed

Drought stress has resulted in poor canola stands that are unable to be harvested. Poor canola stands may provide an alternate forage option. “Livestock producers facing forage shortages may be able to feed their cows canola, provided they take certain precautions,” says Miranda Meehan, North Dakota State University Extension livestock environmental stewardship specialist. “While canola makes palatable feed, it may

U.S. cattle are being shipped north for slaughter

As the drought in Manitoba continued to take hold on the province’s cattle industry, Tyler Slawinski, an auctioneer for the Ashern and Gladstone auction marts, noted two important points. One: some producers in the Interlake region have completely dispersed their cattle because of feed shortages and high prices, as well as the lack of water

With heat stress, prevention is the key via shade, lots of water and misting if possible.

There will be more heat waves, and we need to be prepared

Beef 911: Extreme heat is no different than any natural disaster, so get an emergency checklist ready

By the time you read this, one of the longest heat waves to hit the Prairies should be ancient history and you’ll be assessing what the ramifications were. If this becomes an event we see every few years (global warming?), we need to explore how we can potentially initiate emergency measures to help cattle cope.
