No matter the season make sure exercise remains a regular occurrence in your life.

Health goals can come step by step

Set goals that are specific, measurable, attainable, realistic and timed

There are plenty of reasons to want to take steps to become healthier. Maybe we want to save more money, get fit or wear a smaller clothing size. Improving our health and having more wealth are great motivators, but unfortunately, such resolve often falls by the wayside. This year, I decided to get more exercise.

A tried-and-true old favourite

Honeysuckle has been grown for decades and copes with whatever Mother Nature gives it

Sometimes in our quest to create beautiful gardens we focus on new varieties of plants that are popular at the moment. This is particularly true of the shrubs and the plant hybridizers have recognized this and are churning out new varieties by the dozens. In August 1963, United Grain Growers opened a new 110,000-bushel composite-style (combined elevator and annex) elevator in Foxwarren, replacing one demolished earlier that year, next to a surviving balloon annex. Among the dignitaries attending the opening ceremony seen here was UGG president A.M. “Mac” Runciman. The facility was demolished by Agricore in December 2000.

The Manitoba Historical Society wants to gather information about all the grain elevators in Manitoba

In the 1950s, there were over 700 grain elevators in Manitoba. Today, there are fewer than 200. You can help to preserve the legacy of these disappearing “Prairie sentinels.” The Manitoba Historical Society (MHS) is gathering information about all elevators that ever stood in Manitoba, regardless of their present status. Collaborating with the Manitoba Co-operator it is supplying these

Create safe play areas on your farm

Especially during harvest, there is equipment moving around the farm constantly. Children may perceive the farm as a gigantic playground if they are not given clear rules to follow about safe play areas. Clarity and consistency are key. Little ones do not always recognize or understand dangers even if they have been explained before, and

Goats prefer happy people, study finds

Goats can differentiate between human facial expressions and prefer to interact with happy people, according to a new study led by scientists at Queen Mary University of London. The study, which provides the first evidence of how goats read human emotional expressions, implies that the ability of animals to perceive human facial cues is not limited

Calling all plant cells

Internal communication system aids and
guides plant development, researchers say

Western Canadian researchers have discovered an internal messaging system plants use to manage the growth and division of cells. These growth-management processes are critical for all organisms, because without them, cells can proliferate out of control — as they do in cancers and bacterial infections. Researchers from the University of British Columbia, along with colleagues

When the sun beats down and the mercury spikes, take precautions no matter the season.

Avoid falling to the heat

An unseasonably warm later summer and early fall means you’ll need to stay vigilant

I can’t handle hot weather. While some people are basking in the heat, my face turns bright red almost immediately. My kids pretend they don’t know me. Then I wilt in the shade and retreat indoors. Recently, we had a heat wave that sent temperatures soaring near or above 100 F (38 C) in some
