April 24 (Reuters) - Spot basis bids for soybeans were steady to higher at processors and elevators around the U.S. Midwest early on Thursday in quiet trading as farmers in the eastern Corn Belt worked in the fields, dealers said. * Old-crop soybean supplies were tight, and farmers waited for higher prices to sell what little remained in storage bins, dealers said. * Farmers attempted to complete some planting before rains forced them out of the fields, dealers said. * Rain and thunderstorms were forecast on Thursday for the upper Midwest, according to the National Weather Service.* Grain merchants noted light sales of old crop corn early Thursday morning in western Iowa, where rain kept farmers from their fields. * Corn bids were steady to higher at river terminals but mostly steady at processors. * Corn bids rose by 1 cent to 2 cents per bushel at ethanol plants in Illinois and Iowa, but fell by 6 cents per bushel at a plant in Indiana. * Cool weather across the region has slowed the planting pace. Earlier this week, the U.S. Department of Agriculture said corn acreage was 6 percent planted.
