Nearly one in five ranches now produces certified sustainable beef but the 10 million pounds sold with a CRSB claim is a fraction of Canadian beef production.

A tale of two numbers for sustainable beef

In less than four years, one in five producers has been certified sustainable but market penetration is still low

Glacier FarmMedia – When it comes to making Canada a leader in the certified sustainable beef movement, two numbers stand out – one very large and the other (in relative terms) very small. As of June 30, nearly one-fifth of the country’s beef cattle were raised on farms certified under the standards of the Canadian

Klassen: Steady demand underpins feeder cattle complex

Compared to last week, Alberta yearling markets traded $2-$4 on either side of unchanged; however, 800-pound-plus cattle in Manitoba and Saskatchewan appeared to trade $4-$6 higher. Yearling prices across the Prairies are now relatively even with no freight discounts from major southern Alberta markets. Calf markets are becoming more defined with larger volumes on offer.

Birthweight isn’t as straightforward as it should be

Beef 911: Believe it or not, the methods for determining this critical number can vary a great deal

Purebred producers diligently weigh their calves to give the purebred bull purchasers an accurate prediction, adding that information to data on bull selection and calving ease. It is highly heritable, so birthweight and birthweight EPDs, as well as calving ease, are usually listed in bull sale catalogues. Purebred and commercial products need to be aware of several

Cattle mentorship program invests in next generation

Young producers see it as a way to shorten the learning curve

Two Manitobans are among the 16 finalists for the Cattlemen’s Young Leaders (CYL) Mentorship Program, a national youth initiative of the Canadian Cattle Association (CCA). Every year, the mentorship program selects a group of young leaders interested in any area of the beef supply chain and matches them with a mentor in their area of interest.

“There’s no doubt that cash flow has been extremely tight in the industry, especially after the drought last year, there’s not a huge appetite to be buying in at current prices when everything is just so fresh.” – Tyler Fulton, Manitoba Beef Producers.

Cattle crunch: Tug of war on herd rebuilding prospects

Better prices mean a better outlook for the cattle sector, but will that be enough for producers who feel like they’ve had enough?

It was a tough spring, coming off a tough winter, coming off an even tougher drought year in 2021, but there is finally pay off in the sales ring for cattle producers. Tyler Fulton, president of the Manitoba Beef Producers, estimates that local calf prices are 30 to 50 cents per pound higher than at

High prices continue as fall run approaches

High prices continue as fall run approaches

Feed supplies and beef demand are both expected to be healthy

Prices for butcher cattle remain high just weeks before auction sites in Manitoba begin their fall run. Three auction facilities in the province — Grunthal, Virden and Winnipeg — all hosted regular sales for the week ended Aug. 18. At those sites, D1 and D2 cow prices were between $95 and $112 per hundredweight, while

It should always be on a producer’s radar when it comes to reproductive failure or clinical cases of bloody urine but there are many other causes of these signs.

Leptospirosis and reproductive losses in beef cattle

Beef 911: While clinical cases are not common in Western Canada, detection of lepto titres in AI bulls can be a problem

Leptospirosis has been seen rarely in Western Canada. The three large pharma companies have leptospirosis vaccines, usually in combination with the standard five-way viral vaccines. They do not sell many doses, which indicates low frequency. In veterinary practice, we have suspected it when seeing bloody diarrhea or with a high open rate or abortions. Leptospirosis
