Forecast: A chance of rain early next week

Issued September 26, 2016 – Covering the period from September 28 to October 5, 2016

The strong storm system the weather models forecast last weekend to affect our region did materialize, but as usual with strong storms, it didn’t behave exactly as expected. Instead of coming in as one main system, it came through in waves of energy. It also took a more westerly and northerly track, which resulted in

Forecast: A battle between high and low pressure

Issued September 19, 2016 – Covering the period from September 21 to September 28, 2016

Fall is usually a tough time of year to forecast as we begin our shift from summer to winter. This year looks like it might be tougher than most, since our summer weather pattern was pretty unpredictable. We saw a little of this last week. The storm system that was forecast to track by to

Forecast: Only slight chances for any rain

Issued September 12, 2016 – Covering the period from September 14 to September 21, 2016

After a cool start to the week, thanks to a region of cool polar air, it looks like nice fall weather is going to return for the rest of this week and next. By Wednesday, cool high pressure will be sitting to our east and we should start to see a warm southerly flow around

Forecast: Is the weather pattern switching?

Issued September 2, 2016 – Covering the period from September 7 to September 14, 2016

Due to the September long weekend my deadline is a little earlier than usual, which means my confidence in this forecast will be fairly low. That said, I’ll do my best to generalize the expected weather over the upcoming seven-day period beginning Sept. 7. It doesn’t help that it looks like our weather pattern is

Forecast: Warm with the chance of more thunderstorms

As summer unofficially draws to a close it looks like the warm and relatively dry weather we’ve been seeing will continue. Last issue’s forecast played out fairly well, with the large western low drifting by to our north late in the weekend and the trailing cold front bringing some fairly strong thunderstorms late last Sunday.

Forecast: Chance of showers to start, then dry

Issued August 22, 2016 – Covering the period from August 24 to August 31, 2016

As summer slowly winds down, most regions felt the first little hints of autumn last weekend, as overnight lows dropped into the 5 C range. For this forecast period it looks like summer is going to continue to hang around. That means we’ll probably end up seeing a few hot days, the odd day with

Forecast: Seasonable late-summer weather

Issued August 15, 2016 – Covering the period from August 17 to August 24, 2016

For a change, last week’s upper low ended up weakening considerably as it passed through our region, so instead of seeing several days with clouds and showers we only saw partly cloudy skies with only a few widely scattered showers and thunderstorms. For this forecast period, for the first time in a long while, it

Forecast: Clouds and showers, transitioning to warm and sunny

Issued August 8, 2016 – Covering the period from August 10 to August 17, 2016

As we’ve seen more than once this summer, last week’s upper low ended up being stronger than expected and as a result, it moved slower. The biggest difference in the last couple of upper lows is that instead of bringing clouds and steady rain, they are the focal point for thunderstorms. The rest of last

Forecast: Only a slight chance of thunderstorms

Issued August 1, 2016 – Covering the period from August 3 to August 10, 2016

We finally saw some sustained dry weather during this last forecast period, but as forecast, thunderstorms did make an appearance late in the long weekend, bringing some rain to our region. For this forecast period, it looks like the drier weather will stick around as high pressure once again dominates. Just like the last forecast,

Forecast: Fair confidence in drier weather prediction

Issued July 25, 2016 – Covering the period from July 27 to August 3, 2016

Last week’s forecast played out pretty close to what was expected, with a couple of small issues. Well, one small issue and one big issue. First of all the small issue — the system that affected our region over the weekend was a little slower than expected. The big issue was that all of the
