Forecast: Here we see a weather pattern trying to change

Forecast issued Jan. 13, 2023 • Covering the period from Jan. 18 to 25, 2023

The last forecast period turned out not too badly, considering the weak flow pattern across our region. I said we were going to see a lot of clouds with occasional shots of light snow and, for the most part, that is what we got. On the plus side, temperatures were a little warmer than forecast.

Weather: More clouds than sun, continued mild

Forecast issued Jan. 6, covering the period from Jan. 11 to 18, 2023

It always amazes me how a small change in a single weather system can have big implications on the weather. This happened with the Colorado low in our last forecast. The low formed as expected, but took a much slower and southeasterly route than predicted. It was all part of a stagnant air flow that

An early 2023 weather outlook

It’s very early days yet but it could be a snowy winter and wet spring

Due to the timing of deadlines this holiday season, I cannot provide the usual weather forecast. Instead, I thought we would have a little fun and take a brief look at the latest long-range outlooks for 2023. I will dig deeper into this topic in January and examine some of the factors that may drive

Weather: Up-and-down temperatures

Forecast issued Dec. 30, 2022, covering the period from Jan. 4 to 11, 2023

Well, the weather over the holiday season played out pretty close to what the weather models had predicted. We experienced a good old cold snap in the days leading up to and including Christmas, and then the warm air flooded in from the west almost exactly the day it was predicted. Thankfully, that warm air

Weather: Cold Christmas, then milder

Forecast issued December 16, covering the period from December 21 to December 28, 2022

The main area of low pressure that the models forecasted to impact our region during the last forecast period did materialize, but it ended up taking a much more westerly route than expected. In fact, the low retrograded or moved from east to west a little bit. This meant the rainfall from this system fell

Weather: Major storm a possibility but not certainty

Forecast issued December 9, covering the period from December 14 to December 21, 2022

We are starting to see a trend in medium-range weather forecasts this winter. The first half of the forecasts are turning out well but the second halves are struggling. Last issue’s forecast followed this pattern, with the call for a cold start and then a quick return to milder temperatures. In the second half of

Weather: No extreme cold or big storms expected

Forecast issued December 2, covering the period from December 7 to December 14, 2022

The first half of last issue’s forecast played out pretty darned close to what the weather models predicted. We saw a fairly strong area of low-pressure track through central Manitoba early in the forecast period, and this low was followed by a quick shot of colder air. The second low did develop and brought a

Weather: Colder to start, with chance of snow

Forecast issued November 25, covering the period from November 30 to December 7, 2022

As we have seen with the last few forecasts, the weather models have been doing a good job with the overall weather pattern but are struggling with the details. Take last issue’s forecast: the overall pattern looked mild and dry, and that is exactly what we saw. But the timing of the smaller-scale features was

Weather: A return to milder conditions expected

Forecast issued November 18, covering the period from November 23 to 30, 2022

The last forecast period did not materialize exactly as predicted but the end results were pretty close. We saw several lows drop south to southeastward every couple of days early in the forecast period, bringing light snow. What we did not see was much in the way of clear skies during that period, as the

Weather: Northwesterly flow expected to develop

Forecast issued November 11, covering the period from November 16 to 23, 2022

Weather models had a good handle on our last forecast period. They were correct about the development and overall movement of last week’s Colorado low. It developed as forecasted and ended up moving northeast in two waves, as expected. The first wave was early in the week; the second, late in the week. Timing of
