Soyoil drop plunges soybeans, canola

Soybean industry slams meaningless increase in biofuel mandates from U.S. EPA

As the calendar flipped to December, the fortunes of Chicago soyoil, along with soybeans and canola, turned cold. On Dec. 1, the Environmental Protection Agency announced plans for a new biofuel blending mandate under the United States’ federal Renewable Fuel Standard. Starting in 2023, a greater volume of biofuels will be mixed with fuels at

Pulse weekly outlook: Smaller-than-expected lentil crop may limit exports

MarketsFarm — Smaller-than-expected Canadian lentil production in 2022-23 could limit the country’s export potential going forward, according to an official with Pulse Canada reacting to the latest production estimates. Opinions divided ahead of StatCan production report

Agency's previous estimates model-based

MarketsFarm — Ahead of the crop production report from Statistics Canada (StatCan) due out Friday, trade expectations are above and below what the federal agency estimated in September. In August, and in September, StatCan issued production reports based on a satellite model and without any input from farmers filling out surveys. That has caused some

Canola yields not great, but good improvement

Harvest progress last week was well behind the five-year pace

As farmers contend with less-than-ideal canola yields, the main thing to keep in mind is the 2022-23 harvest will still be vastly better than last year’s. On Sept. 14, Statistics Canada issued its latest production report, following up on its previous one released Aug. 29. That one was based on satellite imagery taken at the

StatCan’s canola call in line with expectations

Agency also boosts wheat projection

MarketsFarm — While Statistics Canada (StatCan) cut its projection for canola production in 2022-23 by 400,000 tonnes, FarmLink Marketing Solutions senior analyst Neil Townsend said the number could go lower. StatCan on Wednesday issued its latest production estimates and lowered its call on canola from the 19.5 million tonnes forecast in its Aug. 29 report

Opinion: Food inflation seems to be concluding

More stability and predictability are leading to a slower inflation rate

Statistics Canada is reminding Canadians every month how painful their trips to the grocery store have been recently. The retail inflation rate is still at an astonishing 9.9 per cent, its highest point since 1981. In fact, our food inflation rate has exceeded the general rate since December of last year, which is why food
