Manitoba farmers fight sprouted wheat after rain

Manitoba’s rainy streak in mid-September has led to some sprouting problems in unharvested wheat fields

Rain in mid-September has led to wheat sprouting problems in some Manitoba farm fields, jeopardizing wheat quality for some farmers who’d hoped for top dollar from this year’s crop.

The June 20-22 rain will ensure that most producers harvest a crop in 2025.

More rainfall for Prairie farmers

As the atmosphere warms, farmers on the Canadian Prairies could see more heavy rainfalls

Heavy rain may become more common as the climate on the Canadian Prairies makes more of the storm types that produce it.

Warmer and wetter future for Prairie farms

Higher humidity and intense rainfall events are all but inevitable as the planet warms

Warming oceans and warming air translate to more humidity. For Manitoba farmers, greater availability of water vapour will make it more likely for precipitation events to tend to the extreme.

This visible satellite image, taken on April 24 around 3pm covers most of southern and central Saskatchewan and Manitoba. It clearly shows the area of snow that fell earlier in the week across southeastern Saskatchewan. It also demonstrates how the cold air over top of the snowy region and the ice covered lakes inhibits cloud formation.

Neither rain, snow, sleet or hail…

It can be tough to tell the various precipitation types from each other

Farmers on the Prairies can expect to see all types of precipitation in the spring and early summer, including snow, rain, sleet and hail.

The drivers of extreme rainfall
