With a provincial election coming at some point this year, producers should not wait to engage with their representatives.

“From my perspective, the election has already begun,” said Cam Dahl, general manager with Manitoba Pork.

Dahl was part of a panel of industry leaders talking about the impending election at an event hosted by the Manitoba Farm Writers and Broadcasters Association (MFWBA).

Five years and counting: Inside Canada’s seed regulatory overhaul

Canada’s seed rule modernization is finally seeing the end of the tunnel, but not everyone in agriculture is convinced about the changes or that the timeline is good enough.

“If I were to deliver one key message to producers today, it would be that we need to engage, and we need to engage now and not wait until the writ is actually dropped,” continued Dahl.

Dahl was joined by Carson Callum, general manager of the Manitoba Beef Producers and Brenna Mahoney, general manager of Keystone Agricultural Producers.

Callum said that despite the differing priorities of the various producer groups, there was a lot of overlap between the sectors. “I think the overarching topics are fairly in line with things like Ag in Classroom, labour shortages, business risk management and the environment.”

Mahoney echoed Callum’s sentiments and said working together on those issues was paramount. “We need each other in order to make a difference in policy,” said Mahoney. “What’s important is the collaboration between the sectors to represent agriculture.”
