Canola values swing within sideways path

FUTURES | The spring seeding window continues to narrow for Manitoba farmers

The ICE Futures canola market saw some wide price swings during the last full week of May, holding within a sideways pattern overall as traders wait to get a clearer picture on new-crop production. After the drought-stricken 2021 crop, ample precipitation in the eastern Prairies this spring has done much to alleviate the moisture situation

Following the release of the May supply-and-demand estimates from the U.S. Department of Agriculture on May 12, July Minneapolis wheat surged to $13.16 per bushel — a new high for the contract. Over the course of the last week, that spring wheat contract has been on a tear, having jumped $1.0625. As well, Kansas City

The pace of Russia’s wheat exports is expected to slow in coming weeks.

Russian wheat prices down amid higher domestic supply

Russian wheat export prices fell in recent days amid higher domestic supply from farmers willing to free up storage before the new crop arrives in summer, analysts said. Russia, one of the world’s largest wheat exporters, continues to export despite difficulties with logistics and payments caused by western sanctions on Moscow over what Russia terms

Spring seeding conditions likely to sway markets

Canola values are recovering up off a hard drop

The ICE Futures canola market dropped hard to start the month of May, seeing heavy bouts of long liquidation as profit-taking finally came forward to weigh on values. However, with no change to underlying fundamentals, the selling quickly ran out of steam and the futures managed to regain much of their lost ground. July canola

Canola continued its astronomical rise during the last week of April, with little to show in the way of any sudden tumble in prices. However, that’s not to say such an event wouldn’t happen, as nothing is a sure thing in the market — well, other than “what goes up must come down”… eventually. As

For many farmers, who have already been pushing their rotations to the limit, stronger competition from other crops will likely limit any acreage increase for canola.

Another week, another round of fresh highs in canola futures as the bullish uptrend in the market showed no signs of subsiding. A profit-taking correction always remains a possibility, but as traders like to say, ‘the trend is your friend… until it’s not.’ The new-crop November contract posted the biggest gains during the week ended

Supplies of vegetable oils are looking tight worldwide

The ICE Futures canola market held strong during the first week of April, with new-crop months hitting fresh contract highs. While the old-crop fundamentals of tight supplies remain supportive, the continued rise in the deferred months is somewhat puzzling at first glance. As far as the old crop is concerned, the cupboards are almost bare.

Canola values haven’t stayed in lockstep with other veg oils

The spread between old-crop canola and new-crop contracted during the week of March 24-31, as the May contract will soon lose its relevance. Russia’s invasion of Ukraine provided a powerful impetus for global oilseed prices to spike, as crude oil’s strong prices provided plenty of support to its edible cousins.
