Global Markets: Northern Alberta community remains evacuated

WINNIPEG, May 23 (MarketsFarm News) – The following is a glance at the news moving markets in Canada and globally.

– Evacuation orders remain in place for the town of High Level, Alta., as fire conditions are extreme and unpredictable. On Wednesday, evacuees were told to plan to stay elsewhere for longer than originally anticipated. “The danger has not passed nor has it diminished,” High Level Mayor Crystal McAteer said. “Wildfires are highly unpredictable and can change at any moment.” Approximately 5,000 people evacuated from High Level and nearby First Nations over the weekend. Originally, they were only supposed to be out of their homes for 72 hours, but fire fighters have not been able to rein in the blaze.

– Following an announcement to blacklist Chinese technology giant Huawei, the United States government is also considering shunning a Chinese video surveillance company, Hikvision. The Trump administration has claimed this move is to punish China for its surveillance and mass detention of Chinese Muslims, however, it adds additional tension to the trade war between the two countries.

– Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has claimed victory in India’s general election, though vote tallies are ongoing. The election was seen as a referendum on Modi, as his economic policies have had mixed results across the highly socially stratified country. Final results are expected to be announced on Thursday.

– The U.S. Pentagon announced it is briefing the White House on options to deploy approximately 5,000 troops to the Middle East. This move comes after President Trump withdrew from the 2015 deal that curbed Iran’s nuclear program, and tightened sanctions on Iranian oil, escalating conflict between the two countries. President Trump has dispatched bombers to the Persian Gulf in response to “unspecified threats,” according to the New York Times.
