Global Markets: China officially arrests two Canadians

WINNIPEG, May 16 (MarketsFarm) – The following is a glance at the news moving markets in Canada and globally.

– United States President Donald Trump has granted a full pardon to Conrad Black, who was convicted of fraud in 2007 and spent three years in U.S. prisons. The former media baron renounced his Canadian citizenship in 2001 in order to become a British Lord. He currently lives in Toronto and wrote a book about Trump in 2018.

– China has formerly arrested two Canadian citizens that have been detained since December on accusations of conspiring to steal state secrets. The Chinese arrest of Michael Kovrig and Michael Spavor is believed to be in retaliation to Canada’s detainment of Huawei executive Meng Wanzhou, who is facing extradition to the U.S.

– New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio is the latest contender (number 24) to throw his hat into the race to be the Democratic nominee for the U.S. 2020 election. De Blasio launched his candidacy Thursday morning.
