There was nothing green at the Winnipeg Livestock Auction on St. Patrick’s Day March 17, 2011.

The bidding prices were more constant than the weather of the day – rain followed by rain pellets and then snow.

The classification of ewes remained within a steady price range, for this sale, from $0.675 to $0.86 per pound; with an exception of one – 115-pound Cheviot-cross ewe, brought $146.63 ($1.275 per pound).

The heavyweight rams provided the lower portion of the price range. A 270-pound Cheviot-cross ram, impressive in form, brought $189 ($0.70 per pound); while two – 285-pound, Suffolk-cross rams, brought $213.75 ($0.75 per pound). Two 195-pound Dorset-cross rams, brought $183.30 ($0.94 per pound). The lighter-weight Suffolkcross ram, at 155 pounds, created more interest in the crowd. The bidding for this Suffolk-cross ram, brought $156.55 ($1.01 per pound).

This lamb had all the markings, and features of a Barbadocross, with the high spirits – only with the normal lamb, wool body shape. It was a lamb with much more “meaty” appearance in framethan the usual Barbado-cross lambs. The 85-pound lamb, brought $163.55 ($1.93 per pound).

The classification of very lightweight lambs was supplied with much lower numbers, compared to the last sale. The prices remained steady with some wild bidding in the crowd. A La mancha-cross Boer buck brought $177.50 ($1.07 per pound). An impressive 190-pound Boer-cross buck, entered and dominated the arena. The continuous bidding from the buyers, raised the massive buck to high expectations, which brought $242.50 ($1.22 per pound).
