Anew joint marketing service for Manitoba and Saskatchewan hog producers is up and running.
Manitoba Pork Marketing Co-op and SPI Marketing Group have formed a new company to act as a one-stop service centre for hog farmers in both provinces. It began operating Jan. 1.
The new entity, called h@ms marketing services, is expected to handle approximately 1.5 hogs in 2010, said John Preun, Manitoba Pork Marketing Co-op president.
Perry Mohr is the new general manager of h@ms. He will also continue in his current position as Manitoba Pork Marketing’s CEO. Don Hrapchak will continue as SPI’s general manager and as a h@ms director.
Preun said h@ms will provide all the producer services which MPM and SPI previously provided separately: marketing, forward contracting, logistics, procurement and settlement.
By eliminating duplication, the new agency is seen as a major expense-saving measure. Preun said it will cut operating costs by 25 to 30 per cent.
