MarketsFarm – Rain fell on all growing regions of Saskatchewan during the week ended June 20 improving growing conditions, according to the province’s weekly crop report released on June 23.
Most areas received at least 20 millimetres of rain during the week, with the communities of Prince Albert, Nipawin, Spiritwood and Kindersley all getting more than 50 mm. The precipitation in the Southeast and East Central regions will maintain good growing conditions and adequate moisture, while rainfall in western areas of the province will support pasture growth and improve hay yields. However, Regina and the area between the provincial capital and Moose Jaw only had less than one mm.

Fall cereal crops in the province are 80 per cent normal to ahead of schedule as of June 20. Pulse crops are at 66 per cent, spring cereals are at 57 per cent and oilseeds are at 46 per cent.
However, flea beetles have caused substantial damage to canola crops in some areas. Cutworms, gophers and hailstorms have also caused damage to crops, along with some isolated reports of frost.
Most growing areas in Saskatchewan have adequate topsoil moisture for croplands. Moose Jaw, Outlook and Swift Current have moisture just short of adequate, while Yorkton and the surrounding area have a surplus. Hay and pasture topsoil moisture in the province is the same in most areas, but areas east of Outlook and west of Swift Current are well below-normal.
