Here’s What’s In The Spring Wheat, Triticale Pipeline

CWRS WHEATS SUPPORTED FOR REGISTRATION BW410: AAFC STEPHEN FOX

Agronomy: Yield within the range of the checks. Maturity, height, straw strength, test weight and kernel weight within the range of the checks.

Disease rating: Resistant (R) to leaf rust, moderately resistant (MR) to stem rust, bunt and smut. Intermediate (I) resistance to fusarium head blight (FHB) and leaf spots. Quality: Improved protein, improved flour yield and excellent flour colour.

BW415: AAFC JULIAN THOMAS

Agronomy: Yield above all the checks. Maturity, height, straw strength, height and test weight within the range of the checks. Kernel weight higher than all the checks. Special considerations: Midge resistant. Waskada tentatively proposed as refuge. Disease rating: R leaf rust, MR stem, S bunt, I smut, I FHB and leaf spots.

Quality: Improved flour yield, slightly hard kernels and improved water absorption.

BW423: CDC PIERRE HUCL

Agronomy: Yield, maturity, height, straw strength, test weight and kernel weight all within the range of the checks.

Special considerations: Low DON levels and carries LR 34 gene.

Disease rating: R leaf rust, MR stem rust, I bunt, I smut – does not meet guideline – MR FHB and I leaf spots.

Quality: Poor starch properties, which could compromise baking performance.

CWRW WHEATS SUPPORTED FOR REGISTRATION W434: AAFC ROB GRAF

Agronomy: Yield, maturity, height, straw strength, test weight, kernel weight within range of the checks.

Special considerations: Winter survival one per cent less than Radiant and Falcon, but considered statistically insignificant. Higher yield than CDC Falcon in the rust area and combined resistance to stem and leaf rust and bunt.

Disease rating: I leaf and stem rust, MR bunt. Quality: Improved protein, strength and amylograph starch properties.

S01-285-7*R CDC BRIAN FOWLER

Agronomy: All measurements within the range of check.

Disease rating: MS bunt, not suitable for western Prairies.

Quality: Improved protein, strength, amylograph starch, hardness, properties, and good baking properties. Flagged for slightly low milling properties.

SPRING TRITICALES SUPPORTED FOR REGISTRATION T204: BRIAN BERES, AAFC (VARIETY FROM CIMMYT)

Agronomy: Higher yield than the checks. Maturity in the range of the checks. Height shorter than all the checks. Straw strength, test weight and kernel weight all in the range of the checks.

Disease rating: R leaf and stem rust and bunt; S FHB– didn’t meet guidelines, but since it is ergot resistant the disease committee set the FHB weakness aside. Quality: Not applicable. Vote: 50, 3, 1.

T200:H . S. RANDHAWA, AA FC (CIMMYT)

Agronomy: Yield higher than the checks. Maturity in the range of the checks. Height shorter than all the checks. Straw strength in the range of the checks. Test weight higher than all the checks. Kernel weight and falling number in range the range of the checks.

Disease rating: R leaf and stem rust and bunt, MS FHB.

Quality: Not applicable. Vote: 52, 1, 1.

T198: ALBERTA AGRICULTURE AND FOOD

Agronomy: Yield, maturity, height, straw strength and test weight all in the range of checks. Kernel weight higher than all the checks.

Disease rating: R leaf and stem rust and bunt. S FHB. Quality: Not applicable Vote: 35, 18, 1.

CWA DWHEATSSUPPORTEDFORREGISTRATION DT801: A. K. SINGH, AAFC

Agronomy: Yield higher than all the checks. Maturity later than all. Height taller than all. Straw strength, test weight, kernel weight in the range of the checks.

Special considerations: Conventional gluten strength, lower FHB and lower DON. Disease rating: R leaf and stem rust and bunt, S smut, MR FHB and I leaf spots. Noted lower DON than other lines in the class.

Quality: Improved test weight, protein and spaghetti yellow colour. Vote: 53, 1, 0.

CANADA PRAIRIE SPRING (RED) HY985: FRANCES KIRIGWI, SYNGENTA CANADA

Agronomy: Yield higher than all the checks. Maturity earlier than all. Height, straw strength and test weight all in the range of the checks. Straw strength in the range. Kernel weight higher than all the checks. Protein higher than all the checks. Disease rating: R leaf and stem rust, MR bunt, R smut, I FHB and leaf spot meeting guidelines.
