Manitoba returns to ‘normal winter conditions’

The caption on this photo by Grace Crayston in our November 22, 2012 issue read “Although last year’s dry winter was a nice reprieve, many Manitobans were happy to see a return to more normal winter conditions.” Daniel Bezte’s article in that issue talked about the big snowfall the previous week, and how the weather models had done a good job predicting a storm, but not where it would arrive. The forecast had been for snowfall in the Red River Valley, but most of the province received at least 15 centimetres and the Mafeking area north of Swan River received 60 to 80 cm.

Two months of turmoil in the beef industry were coming to an end following the purchase of the XL Foods beef slaughter plant in Alberta. The plant, previously owned by Alberta’s Nillson brothers, was shut down in September because of E. coli contamination in several of its products.
