The club held an organizational meeting Oct. 5 where we discussed plans for the year and celebrated Mrs. Lisa Carlson s birthday. Some of the plans for this year are adding a few project book meetings to our schedule and concentrating on judging and judging skills. Our second meeting was held on Nov. 2, which happened to be 4-H Day. The meeting room was decorated with green streamers to celebrate. This year we have 11 members and 5 cloverbuds.

Elected this year for president is Billy Reimer; vice-president, Cameron deRuiter; secretary, Brittney deRuiter; treasurer, Helena Borst; photographers, Thomas Borst and Tyson Allison; banner scanner, Courtney Allison; and reporter, Nolan Vandersluis.

We helped out at the Elm Creek fall supper Nov. 5, where we cleaned tables and served coffee and tea. Upcoming events are our annual potluck supper and awards night on Nov. 26 and weigh day on Dec. 3. Any members taking a market steer to the Carman Fair will be weighing their steers on weigh day, which is when their individual projects will officially start. We are also planning a get-together with the club members and their families during the Christmas holidays. Nolan Vandersluis

Graysville Beef

We d first like to thank all the people who bid on our steers at this year s Carman Fair. We had our first meeting of the year on Oct. 27 at Carman Collegiate, where we handed out the awards from the summer: champion steer, Isabelle Massinon; reserve champion steer and champion carcass appraisal, Evan Dracass; reserve carcass appraisal, Katryn Dequier; and Catlex high rate of gain award, Luke Findlay.

At our reorganization meeting we elected our new executive: president Brodie McCullough, vice-president Patrick Dequier, secretary Isabelle Massinon, treasurer Amanda McCullough and Stephane Le Heiget, club reporter. We discussed the good and bad things about last year s program and some of the things we need to do for this upcoming year. We have already started planning our Christmas party and our weigh date for our steers, both in December.

If you would like to join our beef club, call our head leader, Wes McCullough, at 204-745-2862, or any of our other leaders: Michelle Le Heiget, Rachel Massinon, Lana Findlay or Bruce Dracass. Your project doesn t have to be a calf; it could be another 4-H project instead. For members in the Central Plains, Pembina and Red River areas, swamp camp is scheduled for Jan. 27-29 at Winkler Bible Camp, and is lots of fun. Stephane Le Heiget

Video conference: Engaging youth

Are you looking to build and maintain membership in your organization, or wondering how to get youth interested in participating and volunteering in your events? A video conference workshop for community leaders and volunteers who have an interest in youth is planned for Nov. 23 from 7 to 9 p.m. at a number of MAFRI GO Centres in the province.

Presenters Mark Lawson and Meghan Sprung will discuss techniques to help your organization recruit, train and recognize youth. They will share ways to keep youth engaged and involved in your organization. This workshop will include a combination of presentation via video conference, interactive tasks, sharing of ideas and discussion.

This workshop is expected to be valuable to 4-H leaders, agricultural societies, youth group leaders and community service groups. There is no cost for this workshop, but pre-registration is encouraged. Call your nearest MAFRI office for workshop locations and registration.

Reaping Returns

Cargill and its Victory Hybrid Canola brand are again sponsoring the Reaping Returns Community Outreach Program, designed to inspire local 4-H club members to develop creative projects that make a positive impact in their communities. Each 4-H project team is eligible to receive up to $2,500 to conduct projects that focus on health and nutrition, education and/or the environment.

The program, open to 4-H clubs in Manitoba, Saskatchewan, Alberta and North Dakota, also provides an opportunity for 4-H project teams to receive additional matching funds through Cargill Cares. Club project teams must be affiliated with either the Canadian 4-H Council or U.S. National 4-H Council.

Community projects must fall into one or more of three categories: health/nutrition, education or environmental sustainability.

Cargill is asking participating teams to create videos that explain their projects and goals. A Cargill panel will select the projects to receive funding and notify the selected 4-H club leaders via email. Each selected project will automatically be considered for matching funds through Cargill Cares. For more information visit www.victorycanola.com/reapingreturns, call 204-947-6414 or email Rick_ [email protected].
