Letters: Care, knowledge, passion at the heart of Canada’s egg industry

In response to the July 20 Co-operator article, “Survey says Canadians want cage-free eggs but purchase choices don’t agree”:

The article is largely based on a survey commissioned by an animal activist group in partnership with a U.K.-based polling firm seeking to eliminate the consumption of animal protein. Their agenda is not to contribute to our food system in a constructive way, but to cast doubt on the world-class farming practices in place on Canadian farms

The bottom line is that animals are at the heart of what we do and Canadians know that. We’re continuously evolving to ensure the long-term sustainability of the egg industry that Canadians rely on, with the well-being of our animals remaining our top priority.

Pig transport stress costs pork sector

Popular livestock trailer designs also increase pig stress during transportation, hitting at meat quality, animal welfare and farm profit, Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada researcher says

This is demonstrated by the substantial progress we’ve made in our commitment to phasing out conventional cages and moving to alternative methods of production, bringing industry experts to the table every step of the way.

While this high level of co-ordination takes time, we are set to achieve our goals ahead of schedule. No other country could transform an agriculture supply chain in this way. That’s something for us all to be proud of.

As egg farmers, we’re committed to ensuring Canadians have access to a range of options at the store with various price points because we know that Canadians love Canadian eggs.
