MarketsFarm — It was a pretty good year for yellow and green peas, according to Allan Johnston of Johnston Grains at Welwyn, Sask.
“The weather was so good and the harvest was so good. Everybody got their crops off in excellent shape,” he said.
The most recent weekly crop reports from Manitoba and Saskatchewan indicated the pea harvests in both provinces were complete. Alberta recently reported its pea harvest at 96 per cent finished.
Overall quality and yields were “a little bit better than average,” Johnston said, noting yellow peas in particular are in abundance.

“We probably moved more than 25,000 tonnes through [the Welwyn] office in the last two to three weeks,” he said, with farmers getting $7-$7.50 per bushel picked up.
However, he noted, green peas haven’t moved as much as yellows at this time. For green peas he quoted prices of $8.50-$9/bu. delivered and farmers wanting $9-$10 free on board (f.o.b.).
“If they sit back, they might get it,” Johnston said.
Given the quality of the harvest, he pointed out there weren’t many peas available for feed.
Over the last month the price increased by 70 cents per bushel for green peas — and by 50 for yellows, according to Prairie Ag Hotwire.
Feed peas delivered in Saskatchewan stood at $6.35-$6.65/bu., and in Alberta they fetched $6.52-$7.08/bu. In Manitoba, feed peas were $5.35-$5.75 f.o.b.
