Winnipeg, February 3 – Chickpea prices across Western Canada softened slightly in the past two days. According to the latest information from Prairie Ag Hotwire, bids for Kabuli chickpeas ticked lower in all classes. The most sought-after 10mm varieties fell six cents and were listed at 63 to 64 cents per pound.
Black beans fell half a cent over night to 39 cents per pound. Cranberry beans also fell half a cent to 48 cents per pound.
A new study by the Saskatchewan Pulse Growers says fababeans may find increased marketing opportunities within the hog and poultry sector. The study says marketing opportunities for human consumption are limited with Egypt accounting for 71 percent of all imports. What’s more, Egypt tends to focus on Australian supplies as they have few issues with insect damage. Fababean flour is a growing industry within Canada but its market is still extremely limited, which is why the livestock sector may hold more potential long-term.
