Will and Jen Bergmann are Manitoba’s 2019 Outstanding Young Farmers.

A Glenlea couple is Manitoba’s 2019 Outstanding Young Farmers.

Will and Jen Bergmann of Bergmann Bros. were named the winners of the provincial award earlier this month at an event at the Elkhorn Resort.

Will Bergmann grew up on the family operation, south of Winnipeg, and he and Jen returned to the farm about seven years ago to farm and start their family.

The farm, established in 1925, produces canola, corn, wheat, soybeans, oats and pork. Since their return to the farm Will and Jen have begun a CSA garden that furnished organic fruits and vegetables to subscribers and local restaurants. They also produce microgreens and edible flowers in a greenhouse to garnish food and drink in Winnipeg restaurants. Building on this exposure to the restaurant industry, they’ve opened their own spot, Oxbow, near downtown Winnipeg, which serves vegetables and livestock they grow and provide.

The farm was also acknowledged for its social media presence, with Will being known for championing agriculture through writing and photography that shares the farm life with a wide audience.

Also honoured at the event were runners-up Matt and Josh Verhoog of Woodridge’s Moon Shadow Holsteins.

Canada’s Outstanding Young Farmers for 2019 will be chosen at the National Event in Fredericton, N.B. from December 3 to 8, 2019. The Bergmanns will represent Manitoba there.
