A new online resource is designed to help food business owners navigate regulatory, business and market requirements and challenges.
“Whether you have a new food product idea, you see an unmet demand for local food, or you want to grow a food business, the Business Pathways website can help you build your future in food,” said Ag Minister Derek Johnson in an Oct. 18 news release.
The Business Pathways site guides users based on their business stage or task at hand: startup, build, growth or succession.

Rural Manitoba resources slim on disaster planning
Brandon University’s Rural Development Institute has found that many rural and small municipalities in Manitoba don’t have staff or resources to make formal climate plans against natural disaster.
The user can then explore resources related to that stage, and the questions they have. For instance, “How do I process my product?” leads the user to information on commercial community kitchens, contract manufacturers and co-packers in the province.
“How do I learn about regulatory, processing and food safety requirements?” leads to fact sheets on requirements, like those for marketing direct to consumers, for food service and food safety education materials.
Business owners can also access business development specialists through Manitoba Agriculture. These specialists offer, “consulting and pathfinding services, training and access to resources that will help you manage and grow your business,” the website says.
“Agriculture is a major driver of Manitoba’s economy and small businesses create many of our province’s skilled careers,” said Economic Development, Investment and Trade Minister Cliff Cullen in the news release.
“Entrepreneurialism in the food space is exciting and innovative and offers great potential for growth and expansion,” Cullen added.
