Federal and provincial governments fund $6M for Manitoba food processors

The federal and provincial governments will provide more than $6 million to 19 Manitoba food processors for equipment upgrades, facility expansions and new technologies under the Sustainable Canadian Agricultural Partnership.

Federal Agriculture Minister Heath MacDonald and Manitoba Agriculture Minister Ron Kostyshyn announced the funding in Brandon on July 23.

“When we invest in food processors, we’re helping them grow, stay competitive and ensure they can keep putting their high-quality food on tables here in Canada and around the world,” MacDonald said in a press release sent out that day.

Manitoba signs trade deals with four provinces to reduce barriers

Manitoba has entered into economic co-operation agreements with New Brunswick, Saskatchewan, British Columbia and Prince Edward Island, which are aimed at reducing trade barriers and increasing labour mobility between the provinces.

“These projects will help build a stronger, more resilient food system while supporting good jobs in the process.”

The funding will support projects aimed at improving efficiency, production capacity and environmental performance at food processing facilities across the province.

“These investments support our economy, strengthen our communities and ensure sustainable food security for generations,” Kostyshyn said in the release. “By enhancing our local food infrastructure, we help to create jobs, reduce our carbon footprint and foster a resilient food system that benefits everyone.”
