Ryan Boyd of Glanton was a 2019 Nuffield Scholar.

A scholarship program that sends people around the world to learn about food and agriculture is open for applications.

“Mid-career Canadians with a passion for agriculture” are invited to apply for the program, which is designed to develop leaders and influences in agriculture, Nuffield Canada said in a May 9 news release.

Nuffield Canada’s mandate is to inspire people to make a difference in the world of agriculture. ‘Agriculture’ includes all forms of primary production such as food, fibre, biofuels and aquaculture, the news release said.

Mazergroup’s Bob Mazer dies

Mazergroup’s Bob Mazer, who helped grow his family’s company into a string of farm equipment dealerships and the main dealer for New Holland machinery in Saskatchewan and Manitoba, died July 6 from cancer.

This $15,000 scholarship connects recipients to an extensive network in food and farming through its affiliate programs around the world.

It also provides personal development through travel and study.

“The experience results in personal and professional benefits, while adding value to Canadian agriculture as scholars assume positions of greater influence in their field,” Nuffield Canada said.

Recipients can come from any part of agriculture — including producers, processing, governance and communications and can be owners, managers, employees and other roles.

Manitoban Ryan Boyd received the scholarship in 2019. He runs South Glanton Farms with his family in western Manitoba.

The program had a profound impact on how he looked at agriculture, he told Canadian Cattlemen in 2021.

Boyd has integrated principles of regenerative agriculture, including intensive grazing of his Black Angus herd. He spent his scholarship studying how other producers around the world were using these techniques and making them profitable.

“After travelling and visiting these other countries, it really makes me appreciative for what we have here both in terms of our soil quality and just how advanced our agriculture is, but also just the quality of life that we have and the freedoms,” Boyd told Canadian Cattlemen.

Applications for 2023 Nuffield Canada Agricultural Scholarships are now open and the deadline to apply is June 30, 2022.
