Production estimates for Canada’s major pulse and special crops were mostly lower compared to the previous month, according to updated supply-demand tables released by Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada’s Market Analysis Division on Oct. 18.
Dry pea, dry bean, mustard seed and canaryseed production numbers for the 2012-13 crop year were all lowered from the Sept. 18 report. The government agency did however, up production numbers slightly for both lentils and sunflower seed. Chickpea production numbers were unchanged.
Total production was lower for the 2012-13 crop year, at 4.778 million tonnes, from 5.046 million in September.

Total projected ending stocks were lower compared to the previous report, at 965,000 tonnes from 1.110 million in September.
Ending stocks projections for dry peas, dry beans, mustard seed and canaryseed were all lowered, while sunflower seed’s ending stock estimate was slightly higher. Ending stock projections for lentils and chickpeas were unchanged from the previous report.
Projected ending stocks for all seven major specialty and pulse crops for the 2011-12 crop year were reported as 1.188 million tonnes, down from 1.192 million in the September report.
Exports for 2012-13 were mostly unchanged. Only canaryseed and dry pea exports were revised, with canaryseed slightly higher and dry peas slightly lower.
Total exports for 2012-13 were 4.180 million tonnes, slightly lower compared to the 4.280 million estimate made in September.
Total exports of the seven major speciality and pulse crops for the 2011-12 year were revised lower. The government agency pegged exports for the year at 3.779 million tonnes, compared to the reported 3.907 million in September.
Domestic usage in 2012-13 was expected to come in at 941,000 tonnes, which was lower compared to September’s 968,000-tonne estimate. Domestic usage estimates for lentils and mustard seed were revised higher, while dry peas, canaryseed and sunflower were lower. Estimates for dry beans and chickpeas remained unchanged.
Total domestic usage in 2011-12 was estimated at 1.217 million tonnes, up from the September figure of 1.183 million.
