The fall run may be winding down as the number of cattle sold at Manitoba auction sites declined for the week ended Nov. 24.
All eight auction sites held regular sales during the week and total number of animals going through the rings was 15,449, an 11.3 per cent drop from the previous week that saw 17,411 cattle sold.
“Things are pretty strong. We’re seeing a bigger variation in the quality of cattle this time of year,” said Allan Munroe, general manager of Killarney Auction Mart. “We have wider spreads between different classes of cattle.”

Manitoba cattle prices – Sept. 18
Here are last week’s beef cattle prices in Manitoba, as reported by Manitoba’s auction marts for the week ending Sept. 18, 2025.
The price range for feeder steers for all weight classes during the week ended Nov. 24 was $190-$380 per hundredweight, not much different from the $190-$382.50/cwt. range seen a week earlier. For feeder heifers, the range was $158 to $370. The previous week saw heifer prices from $150 to $287/cwt.

“Steer prices get to a level where guys switch and start buying some heifers. Then you start to see steers back off a little and heifers become stronger,” Munroe said. “It has been a seasonal drop-off and I think it has levelled out. We might see a little bit more strength between now and Christmas, but nothing drastic.”
Among slaughter cattle, D1 and D2 cows sold from $73 to $97/cwt. compared to $60-$93 the previous week.
On the Chicago Mercantile Exchange, the February live cattle contract closed at US$155.425/cwt. on Nov. 23, a $1 drop from the previous day, compared to $154.25 one week earlier. CME January feeder cattle closed at $179.250/cwt. on Nov. 23, $2.425 lower than one day earlier, but higher than the $177.475 close on Nov. 16.
There was no trading Nov. 24 due to the U.S. Thanksgiving Day holiday.
Munroe said most cattle sold are either staying in Western Canada or moving east instead of going to the United States.

“Not many (going) south right now. It’s hard to move those calves south. You’ll start seeing more of that happen as we get into the New Year.”
