Global Markets: U.S. unemployment claims lower than expected

WINNIPEG, Dec. 31 (MarketsFarm) – The following is a glance at the news moving markets in Canada and globally.

United States jobless claims were lower than expected during the week ended Dec. 26, though they remain historically high. Jobless claims declined by 19,000 to total 787,000. Economists expected claims to be over 800,000.

China has authorized its first homegrown COVID-19 vaccine for general use, joining the growing list of available COVID-19 vaccines worldwide. The vaccine has already been administered to healthcare professionals and essential workers. China aims to inoculate 50 million people before its Lunar New Year holiday in February.

Turkey will enter a four-day lockdown today in order to quell the spread of COVID-19 over the New Year’s holiday. Approximately 34,000 law enforcement personnel will be enforcing the lockdown restrictions in Istanbul, the nation’s capital.
