Global Markets: U.S. government shutdown ends

     – The longest United States government shutdown in history came to an end on Wednesday night. The House of Representatives approved the legislation on Wednesday night after the Senate passed it on Monday. President Donald Trump then signed it into law to end the 43-day shutdown. The legislation funds three annual spending bills, reverses the mass firings of government employees during the shutdown and extends government funding until Jan. 30, 2026. Republicans promised Democrats to hold a vote in mid-December to extend health care subsidies.

     – The Canadian government said on Wednesday it will earmark C$186 million towards a “Buy Canadian” policy, previously announced in September, as part of its 2025 budget. Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada said the policy would be “building capacity and increasing competition at home, streamlining processes, and better supporting small and medium Canadian businesses to help them access opportunities more easily.” The policy would be fully implemented next spring. A poll by Leger showed that while a majority of Canadians liked various individual items in the proposed budget, only 30 per cent of respondents liked the budget overall.

     – Ukraine’s justice and energy ministers resigned from their posts on Wednesday amid an investigation into a money-skimming scheme from the country’s energy sector. The vice-president of Ukraine’s state-owned nuclear power company Energoatom, along with four other high-ranking officials in the company, were fired. So far, five people have been detained and seven others were implicated in the kickback scheme that earned approximately US$100 million. Tymur Mindich, co-owner of President Volodymyr Zelenskyy’s Kvartal 95 media company, is believed to be the mastermind of the operation and his whereabouts are unknown.
