Global Markets: Most Canadians support Chinese EVs: poll

Glacier FarmMedia – The following is a glance at the news moving markets in Canada and globally.

     – A new poll by Leger released on Wednesday suggests that most Canadians support the sale of Chinese electric vehicles. Sixty-one per cent of respondents said they supported allowing more Chinese EVs into the market, with 24 per cent saying they strongly backed the decision. Support was higher in Quebec, as well as among men and Canadians aged 55 and over. However, 75 per cent of respondents were concerned about vehicle quality and the effect on Canada’s auto industry. Nearly two-thirds of respondents were also worried about retaliation from the United States if Canada strengthens trade ties with China.

     – The U.S. military shot down an Iranian drone which approached the Abraham Lincoln aircraft carrier on Tuesday. The Shahad-139 drone was intercepted by an F-35 fighter jet. In a separate incident in the Strait of Hormuz, Iranian forces harassed a U.S. flagged merchant vessel. Two Iranian boats and a drone approached the vessel, but it was later escorted by the USS McFaul. The U.S. and Iran are working on peace talks that could begin later this week.

     – Ukrainian and Russian negotiators began a second round of two-day, U.S.-brokered peace talks in Abu Dhabi on Wednesday. However, after talks began, Russian forces attacked a market in the Donetsk region with cluster munitions, killing at least seven people and injuring 15. Ukraine has strongly opposed Russian demands for the former to give up territory.
