– Canada will resume beef exports to China after the latter lifted its ban on Canadian cattle. China prohibited Canadian beef exports beginning in late 2021 after bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE) was found on an Alberta farm. Before the ban, beef exports to China totaled approximately C$200 million per year. Canadian cattle prices are seeing record-highs after years of drought and a shrinking domestic herd.
– Iran’s supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei said on Sunday that an attack by the United States would start a regional war in the Middle East. U.S. President Donald Trump sent the aircraft carrier USS Abraham Lincoln and other warships to the Arabian Sea in response to Tehran’s deadly crackdown on anti-government protests. The speaker of Iran’s parliament Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf also said the republic now considers European Union militaries as terrorist groups. However, Trump said on Sunday that both countries are talking and Iran said it is working on a framework towards nuclear talks. Sunday marked the start of a days-long commemoration of the 1979 Islamic Revolution.

– More than 24,000 public servants have received notices since December that their jobs are at risk, CTV News reported on Monday. Data from the Treasury Board of Canada Secretariat and federal unions showed notices were given to employees in 33 departments. In total, 23,063 notices have been issued to employees and executives in the 24 core public service departments. The government plans to cut 8,230 jobs and 425 management positions through workforce adjustments, while another 7,762 positions will be eliminated through attrition and early retirement. The cuts are an effort by the federal government to shrink the public service by 2029.
