Global Markets: Canadian fertilizer facing steep U.S. duties

  • United States President Donald Trump threatened on Monday to slap “very severe tariffs” on imports of Canadian-made fertilizer as a means to bolster domestic production. Trump’s comments came a day after he alluded that Canada-U.S. trade talks could soon restart. Fertilizer Canada said 90 per cent of Canadian fertilizer output is exported, of which more than half goes to the U.S., especially that made from potash.

  • Ahead of Wednesday’s interest rate announcements from the Bank of Canada and the U.S. Federal Reserve, analysts predicted divergent paths for the central banks. The BoC is expected to freeze its key rates at 2.25 per cent, while the Fed is expected to cut its rates by 25 basis points. Following the most recent employment report from Statistics Canada, there was some thought that the BoC might increase its rates.
  • President Trump announced a US$12 billion aid package for U.S. grain, oilseed and pulse growers on Monday. Over the course of almost a year, U.S. commodity prices have tumbled. The list of 20 eligible crops included soybeans, corn and wheat. Of the aid, US$11 billion was earmarked for qualified farmers with payments to start Feb. 28, 2026, and  US$1 billion was set aside for farmers growing crops not on the list.
  • The border conflict between Thailand and Cambodia continued to escalate on Tuesday, following a series of attacks on Monday. Reports said hundreds of thousands of people are fleeing the border areas as the two sides exchanged rocket and artillery fire as well as drone attacks all resulting in nearly 50 deaths. Cambodia and Thailand have blamed each other from breaking the Malaysian-U.S. brokered ceasefire agreed to in July.
