Global Markets: Canada to introduce aluminum counter-measures

WINNIPEG, Sep. 15 (MarketsFarm) – The following is a glance at the news moving markets in Canada and globally.

– Canadian countermeasures against United States aluminum tariffs will be announced by the government on Tuesday. The estimated C$3.6 billion in counter-measures will come in response to 10 per cent tariffs announced by the U.S. in August. Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has called the U.S. tariffs “unjust.”

– A bipartisan group of Democrat and Republican United States Members of Congress plan to unveil COVID-19 relief legislation on Tuesday worth US$1.5 trillion. Talks in August broke down as Democrats looked for US$2.2 trillion in spending and Republicans would only go up to US$1.3 trillion at the time.

– New Brunswick’s Progressive Conservatives won a re-election on Monday, turning their previous minority government into a majority. Premier Blaine Higgs’ PCs were elected in 27 ridings, with the opposition Liberals taking 17. The Green Party was elected in three ridings and the People’s Alliance took two.
