The Saskatchewan Stock Growers Association plans to rebrand and expand distribution of its member publication.

The SSGA’s book will be renamed, effective with this month’s issue, from The Stockgrower to Saskatchewan Beef Business.

“This past June the SSGA recognized that there were some very compelling arguments in favour of taking the lead in providing a grassroots cattle industry magazine to as many check-off paying producers in Saskatchewan as possible,” SSGA general manager Chad MacPherson said in a release.

For the new book, the SSGA said it “has been able to increase our circulation to include the 10,000 producers who have made the largest contributions to the industry’s voluntary checkoff fund.”

Cattle futures on the Chicago Mercantile Exchange were stronger on Friday, hitting fresh highs to end the week.

“The rebranding of the magazine is a reflection of the Saskatchewan Stock Growers’ efforts in support of encouraging more producers from across the province with varying types and sizes of operations, to get involved in efforts to sustain and enhance the cattle industry in Saskatchewan,” Jim Warren, the magazine’s editor, said in the SSGA’s release.

The SSGA and the Saskatchewan Cattle Feeders Association last year both endorsed the idea of a new umbrella group, the Saskatchewan Cattlemen’s Association.

A series of 11 district elections for the new group are to be held starting Oct. 20 in Carlyle. Nominations for the board of directors are to close Sept. 15.

The SSGA and SCFA between them have about 750 members, according to a recent strategic plan document on the topic.
