Ontario seeding, tillage and application equipment maker Salford Group is taking a share of the spreader market by buying U.S. manufacturer BBI Spreaders.

Salford announced last week it had closed a deal effective Oct. 2 to buy the company, based at Cornelia, Georgia, about 70 km north of Athens.

Financial terms of the deal weren’t released. Salford said BBI will continue to manufacture its spreader line at its Georgia plant and BBI president Richard Hagler will continue to manage operations there.

Founded as Barron and Brothers Interational in the 1990s, BBI makes application equipment for the farm, construction and golf course industries. Its ag product line includes pull-type mechanical, hydraulic and plug-to-tractor spreaders, as well as truck-mounted spreaders.

The company’s farm spreaders can be used to apply fertilizer, lime, compost, litter, shavings and other such inputs.

The two companies’ lines are “complementary to one another and allow each business to reach new markets,” Salford said in its release.

On top of the larger product offering, Salford said, both companies will get access to new sales territories and will build their network of dealerships across the U.S., Canada and overseas.

The Salford and BBI engineering departments will, over time, “collaborate on new product developments that leverage each business’ unique strengths and manufacturing capabilities,” Salford said.

Salford and BBI said they’ll work together for the first time publicly this week at the Sunbelt Ag Expo in Moultrie, Ga., about 100 km north of Tallahassee, Fla. The farm trade show runs Oct. 14-16. — AGCanada.com Network
