BASF Canada has picked up regulatory approval for what’s billed as an easy-to-use version of its Charter cereal seed treatment.
Charter, a Group 3 triticonazole fungicide, is a water-based cereal seed treatment that BASF describes as safe on all types of wheat, barley and oats and that can be applied in the fall or winter with no loss of effectiveness.
The new formulation, branded Charter RTU, is to be sold by the case (two 9.3-litre jugs) or by the 200-litre drum.
The new product can be applied by commercial seed treatment plants, on-farm gravity-flow or mist-type treatment machines or “on-the-go” air seeder treatment systems, BASF said in a release Wednesday.

Charter RTU is registered for use in barley as a control for seed rot and seedling blight caused by seed-borne Fusarium sp., as well as for true loose smut, false loose smut and covered smut.
In wheat, Charter RTU’s label covers control of seed rot and seedling blight caused by seed-borne Fusarium sp., and of loose smut and common bunt.
And in oats, the RTU product is registered for control of loose smut, covered smut, and seed rot and seedling blight caused by seed-borne Fusarium sp.
In all three crops, the RTU product’s label also covers suppression of fusarium crown and root rot, cochliobolus (common) root rot and seedling blight caused by Cochliobolus sativus.
“The new ease of use in addition to the exceptional true loose smut control in barley makes Charter RTU one of the best cereal seed treatment values on the market today,” BASF’s Scott Chapman said in the company’s release.
