A Quebec craft brewery plans to stake a claim on the record for the strongest bottled beer in Canada by alcoholic volume.
Brasseurs du Monde, which is based at St-Hyacinthe and distributes to about 700 stores, bars and restaurants in the province, on Thursday announced the launch of Mauvaise Influence, an “extra strong” malt liquor with alcohol content of 21 per cent.
The beer’s alcohol level is “less detectable than one would expect,” the company said in a release. Mauvaise Influence is “without noticeable effervescence” and best sampled at “close to room temperature in a cognac-style glass.”

Brasseurs du Monde said Mauvaise Influence (French for “bad influence”) offers “more intense” flavours which are “somehow reminescent of sweetish burnt caramel, an intense porter and caramelized coffee” with an “overcooked marmelade aftertaste” that “bears witness to its generous hopping.”
“Extreme beers” are an art mastered by few brewers, said the company, which set up its current shop in 2011 and whose current production capacity now sits at about 6,000 hectolitres (600,000 litres) per year.
Allowing a beer’s alcohol content to rise beyond 15 per cent is one thing but to make the product “a pleasure for the palate” is another, the company said.
Mauvaise Influence and a similar product, Elixir (17 per cent alc. vol.), are to be released at the brewery’s third-anniversary party next Saturday (June 7) in Ste-Hyacinthe. — AGCanada.com Network
