Ag chem firm Mana Canada has been granted registration for its off-patent version of BASF’s Group 2 herbicide Pursuit, to be available for the 2011 growing season.
Calgary-based Mana, the Canadian arm of Israeli chemical company Makhteshim Agan, will sell its imazethapyr herbicide under the brand name Phantom.
Group 2 herbicides are well suited to broadleaf crops, the company said in a release Tuesday, and rotating to a Group 2 herbicide in pulses “saves Group 1 grassy weed herbicides for cereal crops.”
Among crops grown in Eastern Canada, Phantom is registered for use in soybeans, processing peas, snow peas, six kinds of dry common beans (black, Dutch brown, kidney, white, yellow eye and cranberry beans), adzuki beans and snap beans.

Phantom is also registered for use in lima bean crops, but in Ontario only.
In Western Canada, the product is registered for use in field pea crops up until the sixth trifoliate leaf stage.
In both Eastern and Western Canada, the product can also be used for weed control in pure stand alfalfa in the year of establishment, on stands that are to remain for three or more years.
Phantom is a selective herbicide for use on “tough-to-control” weeds such as chickweed, cleavers, green foxtail, hemp-nettle and smartweed, the company said.
A non-ionic surfactant containing “at least 80 per cent active ingredient” such as Ag-Surf or Agral must be added to the spray solution, the company said. Also, the company noted, Phantom is only registered for ground use and is not to be applied by air.
“The biggest advantage that Phantom will have over Pursuit is that Phantom will be widely available at a fair price,” Dale Kushner, Mana Canada’s commercial business manager, said in the company’s release Tuesday.
“Our distribution system reaches a retail network that is spread across the Prairies. Farmers won’t have to drive hundreds of kilometres to get a fair price on Phantom.”
