Ontario’s provincial crop insurance and ag funding agency has launched a new production insurance plan for organic corn grown in the province.

Agricorp’s new plan, announced this week, “recognizes the crop’s higher market value,” the agency said.

Eligible varieties include all commercial corn grown for organic grain or silage, not including sweet corn, popcorn, seed corn or sorghum.

To qualify for the new plan, Agricorp said, the cropland in question must be certified as organic by an accredited certification body in the current crop year.

CBOT Weekly: USDA predicts declines in planting intentions

Declines in projected planting intentions for 2026/27 were not as big as the market expected, after the United States Department of Agriculture released its estimates on March 31. The USDA also issued its quarterly grain stocks report with stocks for soybeans bigger than anticipated, while those for corn were smaller and wheat virtually matched the average trade guess.

As with other organic crops, producers can still choose to insure their organic corn under existing plans for conventional corn, Agricorp said.

The application deadline for the organic corn plan is May 1.

Production insurance (PI) plans, backed by the federal/provincial Growing Forward ag policy funding framework, guarantee a specified level of production, based on a farmer’s yield history and the level of coverage he or she chooses.

Claims are paid when an insured peril causes yield to fall below a farmer’s level of guaranteed production. In Ontario, according to Agricorp, about five million acres are covered each year under PI.

Agricorp’s premium rates for most PI plans for 2011 were also released this week. Growers can check out premium rates and coverage levels online or, if they were enrolled last year, can expect to see a renewal package soon in the mail.
