In keeping with its declining active membership, the Manitoba Pork Council plans to redraw its district map to bring three fewer directors to its board table.
Following its annual general meeting last week in Winnipeg, MPC chairman Karl Kynoch told the hog industry-sponsored radio program Farmscape that paying three fewer directors to attend meetings and hosting three fewer district meetings will lower its costs “a little bit” but not by a great amount.
Due to the recent downsizing in the hog industry, both in the provincial hog herd and in the number of producers, hog farmers felt it appropriate to shrink the board as well, said Kynoch, who farms at Baldur, about 100 km southeast of Brandon.

“We’ve seen a huge amount of contraction and, with all of the crisis in the industry, a lot of the challenges the producers have been facing, we’ve seen a lot of producers drop off or just get out of the business so there’s less and less producers out in the geographics all the time,” Kynoch said on Farmscape.
“At the end of the day we didn’t achieve all of the things we had set out to do through the restructuring but this is one of the steps going forward to change and try to stay current with the times.”
According to the program, which is billed as a presentation of MPC and SaskPork, hog producers voting at last week’s MPC meeting passed a bylaw directing the MPC board to proceed with the structural changes, following recommendations from an independent committee after consultations with hog farmers.
