A broadleaf weed killer combo previously registered for use in Prairie spring wheat, durum and feed barley crops can now also be used in malting barley.
DuPont Canada’s crop protection arm said Monday it has picked up registration for the expanded label on its Group 2 and 4 wettable-granule product Triton C.
The product is a combination of quinclorac, a Group 4 herbicide, and thifensulfuron methyl and tribenuron methyl, the Group 2 active ingredients in DuPont’s Refine SG.
“The weed control growers get from Triton C will help (farmers) achieve the crop quality demanded by the malt barley processing industry,” Jon Gough, cereals product manager for DuPont, said in a release.

Brewers and other end-use customers for malt barley have “very strict” parameters dictating which herbicides are allowed on the crop, he said.
And Triton C meets the guidelines laid out by Health Canada’s Pest Management Regulatory Agency (PMRA), the company said, making it an “effective product” for malt barley growers.
The product is registered for control of various weeds including 24 types of broadleaf plants. The company bills Triton C as strong on cleavers, including Group 2-resistant biotypes.
“Both (Groups 2 and 4) significantly contribute to the control of cleavers, making Triton C an effective tool to manage resistance,” Gough said in the release.
Triton C can also be used against stork’s-bill, sow-thistle, narrow-leaved hawk’s-beard and round-leaved mallow, the company said, noting the product can be used with “a number of different grass partners without compromising wild oat control.”
