A new colouring and puzzle book for Saskatchewan elementary schoolchildren focuses on the role of farmers in caring for livestock and poultry.
The Farm Animal Council of Saskatchewan (FACS) on Monday released Tales from the FACS Farm, a 16-page book including lesson connections for teachers in specific subject areas such as math, health, research, technology, social studies, language arts and science.
“This is an ideal publication for teachers, parents or anyone involved in educating children; and complements the many other efforts by FACS to enhance awareness about farm animal care,” executive director Adele Buettner said.

The national and provincial cattle organizations recently took to social media to reassure producers concerned about proposed traceability regulations.
In the activity book, Faith the Animal Care Specialist, visits the FACS Farm in “Friendly, Sask.” and talks to Happy the Horse, Precious the Pig, Cuddles the Chicken, Hilda the Beefy Heifer and Moona the Milk Cow about farm operations, the family that owns the farm, the “work hard” ethic of farming and the rules and precautions that make the farm safe and animals comfortable and healthy, FACS said.
The book is part of a larger FACS project launched in 2008 that introduced the council’s puppet characters to live theatre audiences at the Saskatoon Fringe Theatre Festival, Prairieland Park Saskatoon Ex and during Education Week at schools and libraries.
FACS now has a website in development featuring more interactive games and activities for young users, Buettner said.
