Farms in flooded areas of British Columbia’s Fraser Valley and southwestern Vancouver Island are now eligible for provincial assistance to cover uninsurable losses.
The province said Thursday it would approve disaster financial assistance (DFA) on eligible damages in the Juan de Fuca electoral area, Fraser Valley Regional District and the Sooke, Metchosin, Langford, Langley, Abbotsford, Chilliwack and Surrey areas.
“The unusually heavy rains combined with snowmelt in the past few days have resulted in a number of flood incidents in the Fraser Valley and southwestern Vancouver Island, causing damage to some homes and businesses,” Public Safety Minister John van Dongen said in a release.

Damage eligible for DFA coverage must be from an uninsurable event such as overland flooding, the province said. Snowload and wind damage are insurable and therefore are not eligible for DFA.
DFA is for eligible homeowners, residential tenants, farms, small businesses and charitable organizations when property is damaged by uninsurable disasters, including “certain floods and mudslides,” the province said.
For acceptable claims, the program covers up to 80 per cent of the portion of a claim exceeding $1,000, to a maximum of $300,000. Local governments are also eligible for DFA, the province said.
