Piglets may now receive a shot of Suvaxyn against porcine circovirus type 2 at three weeks of age, down from four.
Wyeth Animal Health announced Tuesday that it has updated the label for its vaccine product.
“The sooner producers are able to begin protecting young pigs from PCV2, the better the chances for overall herd health and productivity,” Derek Groff, director of marketing with the Guelph-based company, said in a release.
“This new one-week jumpstart gives producers an important new option for controlling the potentially devastating effects of circovirus.”
Suvaxyn PCV2, which provides control of blood infection with PCV2, can be administered as a single two-millilitre dose or in two separate one-mL doses.
That, combined with the new earlier allowable age for hogs to receive the vaccine, gives producers and their veterinarians improved flexibility in deciding when to vaccinate animals, the company said.
