Manitoba’s provincial Crop Diagnostic Lab and Crops Knowledge Centre have received samples this week of wheat plants with distinct purple colouring on their leaves.

Similar symptoms were first reported in 2009, on leaves of Kane wheat, according to staff from Manitoba Agriculture, Food and Rural Initiatives, writing Tuesday on the CropChatter website. But what’s causing the colour change — and could this impact wheat yield?

CropChatter is a forum where farmers and public and private agronomists can share the latest information on crop management in Manitoba. Producers are invited to submit questions to the site.
