Cattlemen launch beef nutrition promotion

The type of nutrition data most shoppers see on the side of a box or bag of processed food is now online for Canadian beef cuts.

The Beef Information Centre, the market development arm of the Canadian Cattlemen’s Association, has launched a new online “virtual beef nutrition counter” giving consumers the nutrient profile for 48 different cuts and types of beef and hamburger.

The online counter divides cuts into four categories: steaks/medallions, strips/cubes, ground beef and roasts.

Canada has given its stamp of approval to pigs gene edited to resist porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome (PRRS).

Nutrition data, which BIC said was developed through an extensive nutrient analysis by an independent lab on the centre’s behalf, is listed for each cut or type, with separate data for the raw and cooked product.

Each listing also includes a system of one, two or three checkmarks to suggest whether the product in question is a source, good source or “excellent” source of the nutrient, based on the percentage of recommended daily intake.

Data listed include the product’s calorie, protein, carbohydrate, cholesterol and fat content (including a breakdown of fats by type), plus counts for individual minerals and vitamins.

“With this new online feature detailing updated nutrient data, it highlights the health benefits of beef that we have always promoted,” said BIC dietitian Carolyn Kallio in a release Thursday.
