Central Alberta cattle producer and industry consultant Brenda Schoepp, a regular columnist in Canadian Cattlemen magazine, has been named to the board of Canada’s Crown ag lender.

Federal Agriculture Minister Gerry Ritz on Tuesday named Schoepp to a three-year term on the board of Farm Credit Canada (FCC), effective immediately.

Ritz described Schoepp, the author of Cattlemen’s "Straight From the Hip" column, as "a successful business owner with a strong commitment to youth and entrepreneurship in agriculture."

Schoepp is a partner in a cow-calf and rescue horse operation at Rimbey, about 60 km northwest of Red Deer.

Recently, the government noted, she helped develop the leadership series YouLead!, designed for youth and new entrants into agriculture. She also founded Women in Search of Excellence (WISE) and is developing a mentorship model for women in agriculture.

Schoepp is also the publisher of Beeflink, a weekly newsletter on the beef sector and beef cattle marketing, and travels across Canada as a professional speaker.

Last year she was awarded the Nuffield Canada Farming Scholarship and in 2011 was named a Cattlemen Young Leaders Mentor for the Canadian Cattlemen’s Association.

Schoepp was also named by Alberta Venture magazine as one of Alberta’s 50 Most Influential People for 2006.

Regina-based FCC on Tuesday noted its own involvement in encouraging young farmers, including the Young Farmer Loan program and its role in the recently-launched multi-year "Agriculture More Than Ever" campaign, aimed at improving perceptions of agriculture in Canada.
